This is a sampling of the mushrooms I have turned. The picture above has mushrooms made from White Birch, Apple, Box Elder and Cedar. The Birch is from the spalted logs and the Cedar came from my Brother in law in Virginia. The Apple and Box Elder are from random branches that have fallen or been cut. I liked the shine that a poly finish gave on these, but in the last year, I have been drawn to a more natural finish like mineral oil. The poly seems to separate you from the wood. Robin and I went to a craft show in Plattsburg and these were popular, but so far around here, they do not sell.
Here is a close-up of the Cedar. The heart of the Cedar is beautiful when exposed through turning. On this piece I left the bottom unfinished so you could rub the bottom and still get the great Cedar smell. My neighbor came over the other night to drop our mail off that was at his mother's (a big plus about living in the country) and found me in the barn. He was interested in what I was turning and asked if I had turned Cedar. He offered to bring me some and the next day he showed up with 4 pieces of Ash and I can't wait to see what comes from them.
