A spurtle and a weedpot

New spurtle from the lathe. A spurtle is used to stir most anything but was originally used for stirring porage. This one is turned from Cherry and finished with a light coat of mineral oil.

Another weedpot from the Ash tree taken down a couple of months ago. I also turned a butter churn for my mother's corn husk doll. When we get the two together I will post pics.

New ladder and spurtle

Had to make another ladder tonight, maybe this time Robin will give me a chance to take a photo after she decorates it.

This spurtle is only about 8" long. Still trying to decide the style, if there is one, that I want to settle on. Each one will be different, but I want to have some specifics that I follow. This is made from Oak and finished with mineral oil. Turning the Oak was a first for me, very hard wood.

Spurtle

This is my latest wood turning project. It is called a Spurtle. It seems it's origins are European and they were mainly used for stirring porridge. It measures about 13" long and is made from one of the Ash logs that my neighbor dropped off last week. I had to use an axe and wedge to get the chunk of wood sized down a bit and then turn away the remainder. I have never turned Ash before, but it seemed to turn just fine. As with most of my turnings, it's always a learning process. I finished this spurtle with mineral oil. I think I will visit my local saw mill and get some Maple for a batch of these. I think they would be versatile in the kitchen, and if not, a heck of a conversation piece.
