Early Spring project

Robin has been eyeing this little garden for a couple of years. This past weekend we had beautiful weather and it prompted us to make some changes to the area.

Part way done.....

We were at the store contemplating getting the stone we needed and took a guess at how many. It turns out we have pretty good eyes, we were only three and a half off. We will let this settle with this weeks rain and she will be able to plant and we will put the slate back in to form a path to the hose shut off. It was almost like one of those DIY tv shows, just an afternoon project, yeah right!

Welcome April! We had a wonderful Sunday, with sun and blue sky, it was an outdoors kind of day. We went to our friends house where they were boiling down sap from 18 trees they have tapped. What a taste and a fun afternoon trip. Great family day.

Spring thoughts...

With the first day of Spring behind us now our thoughts are moving outside. We had a couple of beautiful days last week and that brings you out naturally. My thoughts seem to centered in and around the barn. This corner is receiving a new post this year and I have some ideas in the back that involve moving compost bins and light grading, planting grass, you know fun stuff. Robin's mind goes right to the gardens and many features. Our fish survived the winter in our pond, when we were looking at them yesterday the conversation went to the waterfall and then to a water feature off the deck. We looked online last night and found a very cool idea using our giant rhubarb leaves, more to follow on that. It's snowing outside as I write this, but who cares, we all know Spring has the upper hand now. So we will stay inside with our projects this week and let our thoughts stray outside.

I think we are all in the same boat these days, we have had a wonderful winter season here in the north country, but as we enter March we just can't help thinking of spring. As you walk through the stores these days all the seeds and starter kits are out and the bags and bags of fertilizer and soil give us the smell of spring. It's still too early for it all of course, we know that March can have it's share of winter left in it, but you can feel the change starting to happen. The sun is higher and warmer, and at certain times you feel the melt starting to happen, then we get a day like today with rain. I'm ready for the day when I smell spring, there's always that one day, where you can smell it. It happens in the fall also, you'll have that one day where you just know summer is over, you just hope you're outside that day. We have been realtively quiet here for the month, with little home improvement projects, lots of shoveling and lots of movies by the fire. No cabin fever, just winter living, not much to write about just lots of memories for us to share.

Snowstorm visitor

So we had our "big" snowstorm last night. I find it funny how the media tries to inflict panic on us. I'm all for weather updates, it is important to keep yourself informed and prepared, but it seems like every storm we have is the end all. Anyway, today while we were inside getting ready to venture out, my daughter spotted this guy flying across the yard and landing in the trees out back. Not the greatest pictures, but if you look in the middle of the frame, you can see a big grey blob. I don't know what kind of owl it is but he brought much excitement to our day. Very proud of her for keeping her eyes open and seeing something very special.

We watched him for about fifteen minutes or so and we let her bring the dogs out so she could say hi. Unfortunately he was already gone when she got them out there. She did have time to name him though, say hello to Wink. Great family day today. Hope you are safe and warm in our latest storm.

What a difference...

This was two weeks ago, when we narrowly missed, the big storm that hit the east coast.

And this is what we look like today. After a balmy weekend, today is a little cooler, more like we're used to. Hopefully we will get some snow soon, so the frost won't be so deep, but I have to admit it's been nice not shoveling so far.

When the sun is out like this in the winter, I always take time to face it and soak it up, feel it on my face. A smart lady, that I am very fond of, taught me you can recharge your batteries this way. I'm often thankful I was listening.

Another Christmas has come and passed and the New Year is about to be celebrated. Usually Robin and I will reflect on our craft season over coffee and decide what worked and what didn't. This year we had many new things that were well received by our customers. We are still talking about the name change and all the affects it will have on Robin's Floral Designs. We are not in a rush and we will just see which way the wind blows us. Good thing too, because the wind has been howling for 2 days! We were fortunate not to get dumped on like many others in the surrounding are. The kids were not fortunate, because they are off from school and want to go sledding, and I can't blame them. I hope your Christmas was full of joy and wish you a Happy New Year.

Christmas season and things to think about

Many things going on even though we are done for the season with craft shows. Robin and I have been talking for awhile now about setting up an Etsy account. If you don't know anything about Etsy, it's a gathering place for many artisans, who offer handmade/vintage items for sale. Our website seems to be attracting many customers who are looking for a florist or floral shop, which we are not, so we are thinking about a name change. It will be a big step for us to change an entity that we have worked hard on getting this far. We are attached to Robin's Floral Designs and have to make sure we get the new name right. When Robin started out in the craft business, she was concentrating on florals and wreaths, and then like many businesses she expanded her offerings. I like the direction we are going, so many possibilities, and great enjoyment in coming up with new items. We will keep you posted through the transition. It's going to be an exciting and enjoyable new year, lots to talk and think about.

Christmas in the country update

First day of the Christmas in the country craft tour went well. Robin was busy all day and reports from the other artisans were much of the same. There are three new additions to the tour this year, which is good to see, helps to keep it fresh. We received a dusting of snow last night and the weather looks good for today.

Sculptures in the front yard

Kyle's sculptures have taken over the front yard. These were all made during his time in college.

These guys are pretty spooky when you pull into the yard at night. They are good guardians.

After I put the guy on the right up, Robin thought of the idea of making the old sleigh into a manger, and with some straw and greens there it was. She got the idea from looking at the guy on the left, with his hands on his knees, it looks like he is looking down into the manger. Caution....creative mind at work.

Last show is this weekend, a home tour, called Christmas in the Country. We have been very busy getting everything ready.

These signs were popular in Plattsburgh at our last show.

This was a door of some kind that I found up in the barn and made into a display. The barn is always giving if you look hard enough.

new woodturnings

This candle holder was turned last week and I just finished the wood burned design on the top. I had this design in my head and I'm happy with the way it came out. The house is busy right now getting ready for our last show of the year, lots of creativity in the air, you can almost hear it humming. Love it!

This was my latest turning project. I got tired of my factory shifting knob rattling when I sat at a stop light or idling somewhere, so I turned this new knob, out of a piece of birch I had in the barn.

Already had the wood burner warmed up, so I just had to burn my shift pattern on there, and when I started the truck there was no more rattle. I like this kind of turning project because every time I drive now, I will have my hand on something, that my hands made.

Trying something new for me, wood burning on birch bark, which I found it to be easy and fun. Robin is going to use these in her designs and sell them individually with some ribbon to hang them wherever you may want.

New candle holders

Robin made these candle holders last night and I think they are awesome. She and I had made the wooden backs a while ago and last night she had the idea of applying the star and made her own twisted wire holder.

I heard her pounding with a hammer and wondered what she was working on and when she brought them in I couldn't believe how great they looked. The pounding was on the two staples in the back.

Then before I went to bed she had twisted this Merry Christmas. She has her groove going for the upcoming Christmas in the Country craft tour. This will be tacked on to some sort of creation I'm sure.

Plattsburgh show pics

Robin and I were in Plattsburgh, NY this weekend. It is a great show that we have done in the past, and this weekend was another good one, lots of people enjoying the nice weather and getting some shopping done early.

This was the second show for our new set-up and we were pleased with the display. We did talk about one change we would make for the next time and also got some new ideas from other crafter's displays.

It was a great weekend and we received a big welcome from the kids and dogs that always makes you feel good to be home. The hotel bed was nice, but nothing compares to your own bed, needless to say we both slept like rocks last night. Time to unpack and start getting ready for Christmas in the Country tour.

We had a give-away for the month of October on Facebook. The winner is getting one of our popular pipberry garlands. It was an interesting experiment and we are going to do another one. There is a difference between Facebook and the blog. For us, the blog seems like you are sending your message out to whom ever stops in to read it, and Facebook has defined people your message reaches. The opportunity with Facebook, is friends of friends, may come across your message also. Whether it is the blog or Facebook it's fun trying to build interest in Robin's Floral Design.

Busy day today finishing (hopefully) Robin's inside set-up. She is doing a show this weekend at St. Mary's in Glens Falls. She has done this show in the past and it will be an opportunity to try out the new set-up before Plattsburg next weekend.

Dinner plans

Tonight I decided to make dinner. Robin is the cook of the house, hands down, no doubt about it. She is feeling a little under the weather today, so that's what prompted me to attempt dinner.
I went with the old reliable: goulash. I try to get as close to my Grandmother's as I can. Her's will always be goulash to me, and even though I know I will never get it to taste like hers, it's fun to try. Robin had two helpings, so I think she approved, time to cozy up by the fire.

New wooden votive candle holders

Today I broke out our new wood burning tool and made these two new candle holders. Robin is going to do a little painting on these and I will drill out holes in the top and do some finish sanding. Robin and I already have many ideas for this and can't wait to get started. I am also going to turn some candle holders and burn designs on them. Very excited about this, ideas are flying around, too bad I have to go back to work after this great vacation.

Working vacation

My last vacation week of the year has been a productive one. Monday, Robin and I went to Albany to help Kyle bring this sculpture home. It comes apart at the middle, so he took the long part in his truck, and we got the middle section. It came home and is laying in the side field awaiting it's next move. Tuesday morning was rainy, so we ran errands in Glens Falls, and in the afternoon we cleared all the brush from behind our vegetable garden. I would say we picked up a strip of soon to be yard that is 8'x30'. It should get more light to the garden next year and maybe help ease the bugs when we are up there. Wednesday we had two tons of pellets delivered by Lowes and I started working on Robin's inside set-up for the Plattsburg show next month. The pool is officially shut down for the year and the outside water on both sides of the house is shut off. Yesterday I moved the pellets inside the barn, with the help of my wonderful dog Eve, she has really taken to the work detail. Just in case you were wondering, pellets come in a 40lb bag, that equals 100 trips into the back stall. It only took me an hour and that includes the many times I had to throw the ball for my "helper". We tweaked the inside set-up idea and I think today we will have a keeper. I also got through about a third of the basement clean-up during the few showers we had. Robin has been busy with our annual Grandparents breakfast at the school Wednesday, Thursday and today. The last three afternoons have been busy with soccer games, with another tonight and one tomorrow, and then that wraps up. This may not sound like a vacation to some, but to me, this is what I need to recharge my batteries for my day job. These are all things that you try to cram into your regular schedule, things you think about, things you want to get done. I am happy to say that all the items on my to-do list for this week have been crossed off and I have four days left. I suppose now I can get started on Robin's list, you know that list, I never can quite see the bottom of it. : )

Snowman Gathering

They're finished! What a good looking bunch huh? My painter/designer dropped these off today and I think you will agree she did a fantastic job!

I like the fact that each one has his own distinctive look. As I've said before, when I turn a piece on the wood lathe, each one comes out a little different. It's only fitting that each snowman's face and look is different. That's what makes handmade so special.

I turned these, among other trees and snowmen, almost a year ago! My wonderfully talented mother has had this snowman since last winter, and a couple of months ago she said he was about done, with the exception of his arms. Last week I gave her a box containing the remaining trees and gave her the go ahead to use her judgement and finish them off also. Today these were waiting for me when I got home and all I can say is wow!

I have a feeling these will not last very long at any craft show Robin goes to, so I may have to wait for the Christmas in the Country tour, to bring them out. Since they are all handmade, each will be different, and I think when they are grouped together they will look great. Can you see a little display of these sitting together in a "snowy" setting. I told her I may have found a job for her, and she replied " I don't want a job, I just want to help". Ever modest, most loving, awesome job Mom!

This was Robin's "home" for the two weekends.

She was happy with the set-up and even more happy with her sales! Everything looked great as usual. It's hard to achieve that homey feel but Robin does a great job with it.

Lots of fall colors. It's hard to tell in these pictures, but the twigs that are sticking out are lighted at the ends, these are one of the items Robin is finding people are very excited about.

Eagle Mills Craftshow

When you first arrive at Eagle Mills, you can't help but be drawn to this covered bridge on the property, it stands next to the cider press area.

You can see the press area on the right in this picture. This is the view from the bridge.

This is the opposite side view, very nice setting for a craft show. The building on the left is the bakery, cider donuts and apple pie, seemed to be the popular choices.

Many crafters' tents all around. As you can tell the weather was gorgeous again this past weekend. Two weekends in a row, you can't ask for more. These pictures were Sunday afternoon and there was still many people on the grounds.

Well, as you might have guessed from our lack of posting, we are in full swing now. Robin's first weekend at Eagle Mills was very busy! She goes back this weekend and then we are at the Warrensburg Garage Sale the following weekend. It has been a little hectic around here to say the least. Robin is busy making all kinds of new creations and we will keep our fingers crossed on her taking some pictures this weekend. The Eagle Mills craft show has been going on for some time, they have events all year long, and from her description it sounds wonderful. Now I have to tell you how my day started today. I, like most people around here, love fall. So it was fitting that today, being the first day of Autumn, start the way it did. I was on my way to work this morning and was quite happy with the present I was given. Halfway there, I looked to my left, and in the cow pasture was a bank of early morning fog. The sky behind it was breathtaking, orange and yellow and many other color combinations mixed in. I feel you are rewarded with special things from Mother Nature, from time to time, and when I am rewarded with something that special I feel a need to share it. I told Robin I wanted to call her right then and tell her to go outside, she appreciated this, but I think she was glad I didn't. It was one of those moments that you wish you had a camera, but you know it was for you and anyone else who experienced it. So I'm sorry I don't have a cool picture of it, but I've got a feeling all of us have those moments in our memories, and it's just as good to let your imagination take care of the visual aspect of the story. Do yourself a favor, next time this happens to you, pull over or stop walking and take it in. There are lots of gifts around, we just have to take the time and scoop them up.

Sandy Hill Days

Sandy Hill Days was a success again this year. Robin was featured on our local TV station, the segment was taped while she was setting up, and we joked that it was not her first time in front of the camera. When she worked at a local bank, she was in a short commercial, only this time there was audio to go along. She said she was very relaxed and got a good plug in for Christmas in the Country home tour in. The new items she featured, went very well, and she is very excited for the fall season. I will post pictures of some of the items, hopefully tommorow, when we get fully unpacked. She has shows the next two weekends, and if this show was any indicator, they should go pretty well also. It is always a challenge to find the next "in" thing in home decor, but Robin has a very good eye, and seems to know what people are looking for. Sandy Hill Days is not a typical craft show, in that it has an old time bazaar feeling to it, it ends when the fireworks go off about 10pm. Outstanding weather also helped the weekend, it really felt like early fall and everyone's attitude reflected it. Fall weather seems to put people in a different state of mind, I think it is an innate feeling to plan ahead for winter. Whether it's projects or purchases, it seems people have the same reaction to the oncoming season, do it now and don't wait for the snow to fly.

Nothing like having Robin say "Can you go up and get me some potatoes and tomatos from the garden?" Yes! Is the answer!

I grabbed an onion too, just for good measure.

Then I had to take a picture of two of our Hubbards, they are growing patiently towards future dinners. How about Mr. Spider? I hope he isn't laying claim because he won't win.

Can you smell these cooking with butter and brown sugar? MMMMMMMMMMMM! Hard to think of that now though with this current little heat wave we have. It will come soon enough.

Vacation

We are back from the coast, well rested and we satisfied our lobster craving, for now anyway.

These are views from the marginal way in Ogunquit, Maine. The first couple days of our stay were rainy and the sea was riled from the storm, which gave us a chance to see some big waves crashing ashore.

We made the most of the weather by shopping in Kittery and walking on the beach when it wasn't raining. The wind was strong and we were bundled up in sweatshirts, which the local shops said they were finally selling, since it had been such a beautiful summer so far.

The week finished with a drastic change, sun and heat, perfect beach weather. It's always hard leaving the coast but always good to wake up at home.

The Rutland show was a good experience for Robin, she made some good contacts and got to see some different vendors. The crowds were smaller than she was told they would be, and as she has seen with other shows, the economic climate is still weary. Robin went into this show with a different set-up, different crafts, and being a first time vendor. All these things considered, I feel she did excellent this weekend, it was a challenge that she met head-on. We are looking forward to this weekend in Lake George, familiar set-up, back to our bread and butter but with some new wood decor items.

One of the unique designs from Robin's week.

Day one of the Art in the Park show in Rutland has come to a close, now it is time to relax and gear up for tomorrow. It always feels good to have Robin home after the first day, I don't know who is more nervous, her or me. Sounds like she had a decent day and made some good contacts, one of her designs will hang on the door of a college president in Vermont, not bad for a new line of hand made products.

Well the week sure went by in a flash and Robin is all packed for the Rutland show starting tomorrow. She is excited and nervous about this one, because like I've said, this is out of her comfort zone a bit. It will be great experience for her and sometimes you have to put yourself out there and see what happens. Her new wood line is great, and with some good weather, lots of people in the green mountain state will get to see how hard she has worked these past couple of weeks. Stay tuned.....

Shifting gears....finding new ones

Robin is going to a craft show in Rutland, Vt. this weekend. It is a juried show and they wouldn't let her bring her usual items, it is a chance to test another market, so she did what she needed to do....create. She has been very busy over the past week, making a variety of wood crafts, some I have shown in infancy and others I will post this week. I talked a little about production work last week, and she has done as much as she could of the same designs, without it getting stale. I think Robin was faced with a pretty big obstacle and turned it into an opportunity. She was able to get into a different creative state and think outside her usual comfort zone. This has been a liberating week for her in many ways, she is using almost all of our power tools, and seeing how far she can go with new designs in wood. I think it's a great step forward for Robin's Floral Designs, keep it fresh, and keep evolving.

Stars of summer

Robin has this star hanging from a shepard hook in front of the hydrangea bush. I like pulling in the driveway and seeing it. I think it's very regal looking, is that wierd?

This star is on the front porch door and is hooked to a small grapevine wreath. Robin painted this to add depth to the cut out star in the middle. Love the reflection in the window in the background. I will enjoy these green pictures in the winter months.

And finally, you remember our ladders from a month or so ago, this one is decorated with a pipberry garland. Robin's Floral Designs is constantly changing. Robin was asked to make several duplicates of the wooden creations we have been making. So we had a conversation about duplicating or mass producing certain crafts and we just don't have that mentality. After making six or so of a certain item we are ready to move on. To us each item we make should be a little different. Where is the spice of churning out a dozen of this and two dozen of that, we make six wooden sconces, and each one is hand cut and a little different. If I'm turning at the lathe, trying to turn six or eight snowmen, I take one at a time and let them come out of the wood the way they come out. When Robin is creating designs for sale she starts with a certain idea and may end up with something totally different. That's what makes it special, she would actually be sad when she sold some of her favorite florals, she liked them that much. Anyone who is crafty/artsy/creative knows how hard it is to duplicate, especially by hand. And isn't it great knowing you have purchased the only one of something?

Crafts and turnings

Today was a good day in the barn, I was able to turn two candlesticks and this spurtle.

We also assembled a couple of these square pieces to hold potpourri and some pips.

These birdhouses will be painted and will be decorated with pips and moss etc... fun day in the barn.

Latest from the flower gardens

Robin has said this is the year of the Sunflower, she has also said this is the year of the Dentura Lily, either way it has been a splendid year for both.

The Sunflowers have been out for some time, as you have seen in recent posts, the Dentura's foliage has been flourishing also.......

Now the blossoms are coming in full strength. Very beautiful. I think it's been a great year for everything so far, I don't know if this is the year of anything in particular, or just a blast from the past. I hope you have enjoyed this year as much as we have.

More Primitive Craft designs from the barn

We had a very productive Monday.

Robin spray painted these hydrangea, to be used in an assortment of arrangements.

We were able to knock all these out, plus a couple of other future posts, Monday as well. The barn is such a great work space, it makes these kinds of crafts, very enjoyable to make.

Now for some painted photos, above we have tissue box covers, and below, are two different kinds of candle holders.

These two designs will each receive their own electric grungy candle. Great looking, so far, if I do say so myself.

Candlestick Maker

This is a practice candlestick that I made today on the lathe. The next candlestick will have a larger base, I was just trying to get the form down, before I turned the real thing. We also put together a couple of tissue boxes that I will post pictures of after Robin paints them.

Kindred Spirits

The definition of kindred spirit is a person who shares beliefs, attitudes, feelings or features with another. I, like everyone else, have found kindred spirits along my lifes journey. I am also lucky enough to have married one of my kindred spirits. Robin's creations sometimes speak volumes. I like this for obvious reasons, it means one thing to me, but it could mean something different to you. It may make you think of that one person in your life that still makes you smile. It may even be a gift for that special person. I really like the items Robin makes and I'm pretty sure she likes them too, that's why they don't hang around very long, she puts a little blood, sweat and love in each one of them.

Barn windows

This was my project today, I didn't set out to put windows in the barn, I just went up there with an open mind. I let the barn dictate what I was going to do today. I started moving some boxes around and before you know it I was cutting down windows to fit the openings I had. I know they don't match, but it's a barn, use what you have is our motto. I've had these windows sitting in the loft for a long time and a couple of passes through the table saw took care of any size issues we had.

Strawberry and cream

This is only the third strawberry we've been able to pick this year. The plants are looking healthier and have more fruit coming now, which is encouraging, so it seems we will have more. I don't think we will be having "strawberries and cream" any time soon though. Having them up on the hill gives us something extra to go and check on which is half the fun. It's nice to have all the different gardens to check, very relaxing to just stroll around the yard, and it is a built in excuse to be outside enjoying the late afternoon or early evening. Robin has been doing this for a long time, and now that I have some things to check on, I can see why she enjoys it so much.

Trip to North Creek and Riparius

Took a family ride up north through Chestertown, North Creek and Riparius last weekend. We were delivering an arrangement for a funeral and continued north for a little scenic pleasure. This church is in North Creek, Robin and her family used to attend when they were at camp, I could tell it brought back some good memories for her.

While we were walking through the village this train was blowing it's whistle and we were able to see it pull away from the station and head towards the station below.

Riverside is the name of this station and it is in Riparius. Fitting name, because it is right next to the river, and very clean and well kept.

We also visited a small pottery and art gallery which is next to this station. The kids enjoyed the day, especially the ice cream in Warrensburg, it was a great way to spend a Sunday.

Colors of summer

Robin and I were talking about the seasons yesterday, the likes and dislikes, and our favorites. A gentleman mentioned to us yesterday that summer was half over. It doesn't feel like it's half over. We don't want it to be half over! For me, this has been one of the best spring and summers, I have had. No specific reason, just enjoying every day, and will continue this through the remainder of this year. In our conversation, we decided to enjoy all of the seasons and not pinpoint one, waiting for it to come and then sad to see it end. Looking back to previous posts on this blog, has helped me appreciate the winter and spring, and now these beautiful flowers will be with us in the middle of next winter!

The vegetable garden is in full swing with this beautiful weather we are having.

Summer squash and Zucchini. Every year Robin and I say we are going to pick them small and enjoy them. It doesn't take long, with this kind of weather, for these guys to get out of hand. These pics were from Friday.

This is what they look like open. Robin got these a couple of years ago and I think they are my favorite now. It's funny how your favorite, changes as the year progresses.

We are in the midst of a heat wave here in the Northeast. Three days of 90 degrees or better. After having a great spring, our summer is starting off, like summer. We will change how we live for a few days, lots of swimming, and the house will be closed up to keep the heat out. Then when we get that thunderstorm later in the week, all the windows will be open, and we will welcome the big breeze inside.

Rasberry!

I picked our first rasberry today. While I was (finally) mowing the lawn tonight, I spotted a ripe rasberry, and promptly took a photo and gave it to Robin. Mowing the lawn took a little longer than planned after I mowed over Ginger's dog cable. It wrapped around the middle blade and took me a little bit to remove it. Great night to be outside doing anything, even unwrapping a stubborn dog run cable.

This is Robin's view from her booth at Lake George Summerfest, not bad huh? The band had just finished up and it was time to get packing.

The great thing about Lake George shows is you already have the people in the village. The bad thing is most are on vacation and not looking to purchase, as opposed to the other craft shows, where people are going there with a purchase in mind.

Our goal on breakdown day, is to go from this..............

....to this, in the least amount of time. We have a good system and the kids are getting bigger, so there is more help, and less bickering between them. That and they know there is food involved!

Made some changes to the blog today, I hope you like them, I don't think I am done just yet.Took this a couple of days ago. The school year has ended and the kids can now focus on summer fun. Robin is having better luck in the weather department for this weekends show up in Lake George. Summerfest at Shepard's Park is coming to a close today, the kids and I will be heading to the lake, as the break down crew. We swoop in and help pack everything up and then hopefully get an ice cream for our efforts. I will post some pictures, of the show and breakdown process, later. Going to enjoy this very nice day, hope you do too.

The pond flowers and landscaping has filled in very nicely. I will try to get pics posted of the water lily open. The inhabitants also are filling in nicely.

Mr. Bigs or is this King? The kids usually name the frogs and they aren't around to tell me which guy this is, but he is definately the big boy in town tonight.

Here he is making some noise protecting his pad. I think I was getting too close for his comfort.

And here are our goldfish. They are still pretty small and very fast swimmers, so getting a picture is pretty hard. Please excuse the blurry shots.

They are starting to look for Robin when she feeds them, so hopefully as they get bigger and more accustomed to us being around, I will be able to get some good close-ups. We started out with 25 and we think we have 15 or so left. We are very much enjoying our pond and waterfall.

I was out with the dogs last night and tried to get some pictures of the fireflies. My camera has limitations, I couldn't capture the fireflies, so I tried the sky and this is what I got.

A spurtle and a weedpot

New spurtle from the lathe. A spurtle is used to stir most anything but was originally used for stirring porage. This one is turned from Cherry and finished with a light coat of mineral oil.

Another weedpot from the Ash tree taken down a couple of months ago. I also turned a butter churn for my mother's corn husk doll. When we get the two together I will post pics.

First craft show in the books

Yesterday, was much better weather, and there was quite a big crowd for most of the day.

I wouldn't say Saturday was a rainout completely but it was a tough crafting day. Robin's tent was along this row on the street. As I said before the parking garage was built last year and took over the lot that had been home to the Zonta craft fair for many years. I think it was a little confusing for the patrons because the show was so spread out. Robin did hear postitive comments about the set up also. Change is good.

Robin's tent had a different feel to it when I first walked in. I think it was the new Americana and candle decor. There is always so much to see in her booth.

Overall a good start to the 2010 craft show season. Lake George Summerfest in Shepard's Park in two weeks. Robin will be in front of the bandstand in her usual spot next to her good friend Therese. Look for the two of them dancing to the music in front of their booths.

Craft Show Blues

It's raining this morning, which is a good thing for my grass, and vegetable garden. Today however is the first day of Robin's first craft show of the season. Rain is the one thing crafters don't really care to see. The radar loop looks like it will be over in a little while though, so let's hope for some afternoon breaks of sun. If you happen to be in the Glens Falls, NY area today or tomorrow the show is in Crandall Park and surrounding streets 10 to 5 today and 10 to 4 tomorrow.

I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago from the truck while dropping off some things to a friend. I know it drives Robin crazy when I'm not really paying strict attention to the road, (i.e. taking pictures while driving) but my Aunt taught me to listen to your tires, when you hear you are on gravel just ease back onto the road;) This is about 5 miles up the road from us and the view never disappoints. Talking to friends, who don't live in the country, they will say things like "Oh but it's such a long drive, that will take like a half an hour" we just laugh because it seems like everything from here is a half hour. We plan our trips accordingly, if you are going you might as well pick up this or that. We feel blessed to live here and always enjoy the scenery "up the road".

The Barn is a productive place these days

Wood crafts were flying out of the barn today. This is a before and after shot of a new candle holder design.

Today was a busy day while the kids were in school.

These candle boxes will be painted and have electric, flickering votive candles on top.

These two candle boxes were made a couple of weeks ago and today we were able to get tops made for them. Robin painted the inside of the red one with orange paint and the blue one with yellow paint. It gives the inside a kind of glow even before the candle is in there. Great day spent with my favorite person.

I've had trouble in the past with the shape of weedpots, but this one came out more the way I want them to.

This is turned from a limb of the Ash tree that I took down a few weeks ago.

I think I will add some stain and see if I can get the grain to pop out a little bit. It is too blonde and bland the way it is. The new gouge worked beautifully and was a pleasure to use. The right tool makes the difference that's for sure.

Rainy today, perfect day for building some ladders for Robin's upcoming show. These will receive some paint and maybe some pipberry garlands and rusty stars. Looks like we lucked out with the grass we planted on Monday as Mother Nature is helping us out with this nice overcast and rainy weather. I am planning on trying out my new roughing gouge tomorrow and will hopefully have something new from the lathe to post.

All winter I thought about how much I was going to be able to post to the blog once spring came around. There would be so many things going on and so many things to write about. Well now that we are in the throws of late spring, there are many things going on and many things to write about. The problem seems to be time, the days have been so great and long and filled with the outside, that I just haven't gotten around to posting. That and me being in the beverage industry (we were a little busy last week), so now that the vegetable garden is planted and the grass is planted in the new lawn area, we should be adjusting to the summer schedule. Just in time too because Robin's first craft show is next weekend, Zonta's Country Faire in downtown Glens Falls.

Americana Flags..new from the barn

Here is our latest creation, Americana Flags. They are made from 100 yr old lath from the barn walls. Robin and I stacked all the lath strips after we ripped what was left of the lath and plaster down a couple of years ago. Recycling at it's finest and what better use than a patriotic symbol. I also got to play with my new air nailer to assemble these, which made the process so much faster than using finish nails and a hammer. I love to prove to Robin that it was a great idea to buy a tool! The flags are 17" wide and 10 1/2" tall and will have a wire on the back for hanging. As you can see we ran out of daylight so they will be finished within the next couple of days. Today was a beauty, a great day to be outside. Tomorrow sounds like a carbon copy. Enjoy!

Pond and Waterfall almost done

This morning we went for 4 loads of rocks from our neighbor's property. It was just a perfect day for this kind of work.

The new pond pump came this week and we hooked it up yesterday. Robin liked the flow from the top, so we were a go for today.

Our friend Jeremy found this great rock for the lower, slate, stream. The water line fit perfectly in the back side of this rock. Thank you Mother Nature.

View from the top seemed to change every ten minutes or so.

With some finishing touches this week and some new plantings around it, I think we are done with this project. I will post late summer pics when everything fills in.

Big mushroom from the Lathe

The mushroom on the right was turned a little while ago and I had several people question how big it was. When I told them it was only about 3" tall, they seemed dissapointed. So tonight I turned this mushroom of about 8" and much bigger around, and I will see what kind of reaction it brings. I enjoy the challenge of turning something different and also finding what people like.

Compost and Garden

This is one of my compost bins. I went with the pallet construction because they are free and I like free. Robin has often said my bins are not the prettiest, but she has no problem with the black gold that comes out of them.

I would love to have one of those cool (expensive) composting barrels, but this method has worked for us so far, and a little pitchforking never hurt anybody.

This hayfield is our vegetable garden. That's right, if you don't know, we are lasagna gardeners.

We tried the "no dig" method last year and were pleasantly surprised how well our garden did. So we made the garden bigger and this is where our potatoes and onions are planted. The hay kind of flattens the picture out, but you can see some of the hills started for the potatoes in the back.

Strawberries are coming along nicely, we have our fingers crossed on these guys.

Monday ride

Monday was chilly, but very sunny, and a great day for us to take a ride. We decided to go check out a prospective gardening job. It is located up the road from our house and this is what she will have to drive by to get to it. Horrible...... don't you think? We feel very blessed to have scenery like this in our back yard.

This is the area she will start and below is an additional area. Lots of the "heavy" work already done, which is a good thing.

Building the stream

Today was stream/waterfall day. We got a late start after running some errands this morning. We were at a stall point right off the bat, nothing seemed to flow, literally. Robin and I just stared at the stream bed and I decided to run water while we pondered what to do next. Things started coming together and after a trip to the hardware, we were laying down rocks!

We have achieved the sound we are looking for, the look will be awhile yet.

We have a T in our water line right now, so the volume of water being supplied to the upper tier and lower waterfall is split. We are going to get an additional pump, then it will be the volume of water coming from the top that we are looking for and more volume in the waterfall above.

Not bad, so far, still alot of tinkering to do. We will hide the water line with small rocks and eventually moss will grow in and help hide the liner. We have many more small rocks waiting to be added, but we ran out of time today. I had two things to get done before dark, get the potatoes and onions planted and go fishing with my son. With a little hustle we got it done and got our planned fishing trip in. The bail of hay we got from a local farm was so huge, we covered the planted area and the rest of the garden, and still had plenty for the hay loft. I like to think the barn is glad to have hay back in the loft.

One of those days

No work on the pond today, but it was an outside day, that's for sure. After a morning shower it brightened up into one of those days. Above you can see some garlic chutes coming up.

This lilac tree is finally flowering nicely. It has struggled for years. Not this year though, while we were working yesterday, we enjoyed the smell of these.

Breezy this afternoon. I just had to get a picture of the Maples with the beautiful blue sky behind.

Today was one of those days. You just don't want to go inside. Still time to get those last few things done. Like Eve, here eating something disgusting, always time to eat that last gross morsel that the yard holds.

And of course, always time for one last catch.

Day Three Pond Project

Okay so day three started with a trip to the sawmill and feed store looking for spent hay for the garden. We even checked with our neighbor, who rumor had it had some BIG bales for sale. We came up empty and we felt like we were burning the morning up, so it was on to the pond.

It was all going very well and we got it full and then it happened......

We both knew it wasn't deep enough. So, I did what any sane man would do in this case, I pumped it out and started digging. And took a couple off action shots of course!

Round two and we are much happier with the depth.

Now it is on to the waterfall/stream portion. Oh yes, there is more to this pond project than just a pond. We've had this stream/waterfall running in the past, and, never quite got it right. With all our past mistakes to guide us, hopefully we can get this the way we want it.

This is about where we finished up tonight. The tiered effect is new to us and tomorrow, with rested muscles and backs, we should be able to get close to the end.

New Take on Kyle's sculpture

Maples and things

Robin found and transplanted these two Maples last week. So far they are looking good, we have our fingers crossed that they live.

Rhubarb is going to seed already, I'm always impressed with the size of these leaves. This is a transplant from the middle of our back yard about 9 years ago. Very hearty, and obviously loves the clay.

We ended our day at this point. We dug the pond bottom deeper, and put the old liner back in for a barrier for the new liner. We also came up with an idea for the stream that we will work on while the pond is filling up tomorrow. Good day.

Day Two

Today was supposed to be day two of the pond project. But instead it turned into the hose hook-up on the north side of the house, trip to the garden center, and plant some stuff day. Finally picked up the onion and potato sets to plant this week along with a Heritage Rasberry plant.
Before the rain came Robin and I did manage to scoop the remaining muck from the old liner into a wheel barrow and then, with the heavy rain coming, we decided it would be best to leave the liner in place to protect the dirt underneath. We all ended up on the front porch for the storm and I snapped these pics from there.

Robin was able to plant the blueberry bushes and the strawberries before the downpour.

We also got this beautiful Japanese Maple planted. Robin got a great deal on this, you are not going to believe it, but she paid $12.00 for this! We have been looking at these, and they are always pricey, she can smell a bargain that's for sure. As I type, the storm has passed and it is clearing up nicely, the birds are singing and we have a few more things to do before dinner. The new liner came today and tomorrow it will go in.

Day One

Here is where our pond project begins. The pond was put in by previous owners, the liner has been losing water from holes around the top, due to UV damage. The large blob that looks like leaves in the top photo is a couple of water lilies that have tripled in size. We had to use a shovel to split them apart and the potato rake to pull them out. We were moving right along and then the first shower came, no problem, we'll work through it. Then the downpour came, no problem, we'll take a break. The rain was short lived and we finished what we needed to today.

Robin knows I love action shots. She did not mind the frogs jumping around, but she did mind the snake we disturbed, three times.

This was taken minutes ago. Of course the sun shines after you clean up, just makes you want to get dirty again! We will do some digging tomorrow morning and be ready for the new liner when it arrives.

Apple Blossoms

The Apple blossoms are just coming on this week. The last two years we have eaten apples from this tree.

Hopefully we will make it three years in a row. We did not plant these trees, but are more than happy to reap the harvest. The trees that were felled over the weekend were pretty close to one of our apple trees. Robin was very impressed that we didn't damage the Apple tree or the two tulips right in front of the last tree. Now maybe I can sneak off for a little fun at the lathe!

Big weekend project

We have been admiring this big Maple for as long as we've been here, and this weekend we decided to go ahead with our plan to take down the two evergreen trees in front of it.

All went very well, with the help of extra hands, and today we finished cutting up the trees.

Robin worked this week on the Rasberry patch, and this area will be Blueberrys. She has always heard the stories of picking on Blueberry Hill from my mother and aunt, and decided to start our own, in memory of Gram.

This is a job well done and our muscles are telling us so right now.

Spring Continued

Grungy Candles

Robin's latest creation.....Grungy Candles. As you remember from the Barn takeover she was drilling out these pillar candles to accept an electric flicker candle.

She melted down one candle and the shavings and then added the spices. Then she poured the mixture over the other candles and rolled them to achieve the grunge.

Small votives were also on the menu.

The great thing with these candles is you can "burn" them for approximately 300 hours and then replace the battery or the whole flickering candle, and you don't have to replace the pillar.

A bit messy but totally worth it. These pictures don't show how well the candles came out, you just have to see them in person. Speaking of that, you can find these at Ryder Road Farm on Rt 4 between Fort Ann and Whitehall.

Usually, the bigger the mess, the more fun you had. Robin had ALOT of FUN!

Rolling Pin

I found this long blank of Cherry downstairs today, and decided to make it round!

First I round the blank...........

Then layout where the handles will be using Robin's rolling pin as a guide.

With a coat of mineral oil, it is finished.

Robin's is on the top, mine on the bottom. Major differences are shape of handles and Robin's handles are hooked to a rod that passes through the pin's body, and spin freely. Mine is all one solid piece and you let it spin in your hands. We watched the movie Julie & Julia last night and the rolling pins Julia Childs used did not have handles, they were just a rounded, tapered stick. I suppose like all of my latest turnings these will all differ some, part of the uniqueness of handmade.

This drill press is used for drilling wood, not candles! It's all in good fun, Robin has an idea and this is just the start, don't worry I will show the end result.

But the barn does smell a little "girly" right now. Robin is planning to melt these shavings down into something, I'll keep you posted.

Box Elder Bowl

I have had a Box Elder tree trunk on the ground for over a year now. Just one of those things you always mean to get around to, and don't. So today I fired up the chainsaw and took a few passes through two of the chunks. It's amazing how wet this wood still is, after losing all of its leaves a couple of years ago, me finally cutting it down and it laying there all this time.

After I get the slabs cut off the logs, I go to the bandsaw and make them as round as possible, then onto the lathe.

This will not be a bowl for use in the kitchen. It has some nice spalting and will be a decorative piece for maybe an electric candle and potpourri.

New stuff from the Barn

Robin and I made two more candle holder boxes today, she will be putting her finishing touches on these, and I will post completed photos later.

I also got to turn two more garden dibbers. As you can see the Rhubarb is coming up fast now.

Kyle's Senior Show

We went to Kyle's senior show last night and here are a few photos of his piece entitled Short Summary.

He was very pleased, as we were, to have his sculpture be the first thing you see when coming through the door. Actually it was very visable even before you entered the building.

This is the fifth piece in the series he has done with no torso. You can find other photos, of other pieces, on this blog.

As you can imagine, his piece generated alot of discussion, and being able to stand by and listen to the praise was neat.
